SuperRare on an L2

With the expansion of rollups like Optimism and Arbitrum to roughly $1 billion in TVL, it feels that it is time to take the multi-chain future seriously.

I believe that SuperRare should initiate and fund a research report outlining the following topics in regards to the potential expansion of SuperRare to a new chain:

  • security of rollups
  • current chain usage + potential for growth
  • feasibility of xChain governance
  • bridging solutions (for both fungible and non-fungible tokens)

The purpose of this post is twofold:

Purpose #1: to gauge the interest of the SuperRare community in expanding to a new chain

Purpose #2: to ideate on a budget + propose potential research groups to reach out to

Would love to hear your thoughts!

Since SR is not a high frequency use app, gas fee is not an immediate pain point for both collector and artists, L2 deployment may be too early.

I think it’s an interesting idea to explore L2s. We could also deploy the protocol on another chain like Matic if there was strong artist and collector support.

I agree with this statement in the short-term for both SuperRare + the NFT community at large.

However, on a 5-10 year timescale, NFT ownership is likely to move off mainnet.

The purpose of this governance proposal is not about pushing for expansion right now… it is to start the process of researching + analyzing different L2s so that when the time comes for L2 deployment, SR has a gameplan for where it wants to expand to first.

Stats I envision this research report unearthing is something like:

  • how many mainnet NFT owners have bridged to Arbitrum, Optimism, Starknet, Polygon, etc?
  • what is the median or avg price of NFTs purchased on Arbitrum, Optimism, Starknet, Polygon, etc?
  • how many unique buyers NFT buyers are on Arbitrum, Optimism, Starknet, Polygon, etc.?

With SR’s brand, it would become a major player on any L2 or EVM compatible chain immediately.

While the current sentiment seems to be that only mainnet NFTs are “flex-worthy” purchases, it is only a matter of time before ppl realize that L2s offer nearly the same security at a fraction of the gas costs.

I mean, seriously, here are the Optimism NFT marketplaces:

SR would immediately be the most prestigious, popular brand on the Optimism NFT scene.

I’ve been thinking more about this.

An MVP approach could be to deploy the protocol on Optimism, but not worry about bridging assets and just let people mint and buy on the L2. Then if there’s serious interest we can invest time into bridging etc.
